Why do we clients go along with inappropriate behavior from professionals? What keeps us quiet and subservient in their presence? Why do we abide situations that offend us? What allows us to dismiss reprehensible circumstances, thereby normalizing conduct we otherwise deplore?
The answer is simple. We worry that challenging the professional's inappropriate behavior could negatively affect his or her attitudes toward us and his or her concern for our welfare. The threat of abandonment and terror of the unknown reawaken our primal fears. We know we need what professionals have to offer.
Even if we are cynical, we know the good that professionals can do for us and we want to count on their help. Even when professionals disappoint us, we often continue to hope that our next encounters will be different. Since we are partially dependent creatures and cannot fully care for ourselves, we prefer to pay the cost of tolerating painful experiences rather than ending up alone.
