Where Was His Wife?

     Where was she? The minister's wife... dutifully standing nearby... smiling and agreeable... welcoming my husband and my children and myself into the family... Where was she? Shopping? Running errands? Busy with things here and there?
     My arrival for Bible study became her chance to leave the house. My arrival signaled the beginning of her break. My arrival relieved her of many things. Did she know? Had this kind of thing happened before? Could she leave me there with him, knowing? I have so many questions about this.
     Such a sweet lady.... I don't want to believe that she knew about her husband's extra-curricular activities. I don't want to believe she had dealt with this kind of thing before. But she always gave us space and time to be alone. It almost seemed like she cooperated with her husband's abuse of me.
