My husband and I met the elderly couple when they moved back to our community, after serving for many years in different churches within the denomination. Now retired, this minister and his wife had returned to their home... as well as to the church they had helped to found, and in which they had served during the early years of ministry. Both were fragile and struggling in their life with health problems.
Of course, they were welcomed with open arms. Many in the church remembered their ministry here... or had heard about it. He began preaching again occasionally, and taught a series of Sunday School classes from time to time.
Though he could no longer walk very well, he got around fine in a scooter. People respected his spirit and perseverance. His wife, though small and fragile in her old age, seemed strong and resolute in supporting her husband's activities.

My husband and I thought we could help them. And we did… becoming their friends, helpers, grocery-shoppers, drivers, and eventually, even taking on the role of grown children in their lives. They considered us part of their family, and we had many happy times together.
For nine years we even spent a few weeks of our summer time together at the Sea Coast Inn in Imperial Beach, California, enjoying the beauty of nature at the very edge of the ocean.
